Keeping Up the Pureness

Matsui Fuyuko can be seen as the "japan’s next big art sensation" since Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara but her art is far more interesting at some points :

- she is using traditional Nihonga style but including morbid and grotesque aspects. Her drawing style/technicity is excellent and the result is credible as it doesn't appear as a caricature. This is why her art is so modern, timeless and creates a real and personal world/atmosphere.

- She is somewhere "anti girlish/Kawai" art. Probably a critic to the new japan art scene as she stated it in an interview : "I don’t like sweet and cute art, Japanese art nowadays is like that, but if we think in centuries, in the Kamakura period for example, it was scarier, more ghostly. I want to return to that taste in my art." But also in front of those beautiful "maltreated and victimised" female bodies you can have many nice interpretation of what's on Matsui's mind...

- In that way she can be interpreted as the feminine answer to the Maruo and Hanawa "Bloody Ukiyo-E". Also it's quite rare as it's the first time I come across that kind of art done by a japanese woman ... And forgive me if I prefer her than the two precited as she far more cute ... no ?

Timeless goes metal ... underground

Michael Williams collaborated for some pages in the last Timeless issue. He is a multi talented artist writing books, playing in bands and creating some artwork.
His main occupation is this mythical sluge metal band called Eyehategod. Michael is also very attracted by electronic noise music as he participated for a track in Bloodyminded album "Gift Givers" (where I have the great privilege to share some shouting with the maestro ... thanks Mark !!!).

My first contact with Eyehategod happened some years ago while staying at the flat of my friend Stephen (the Kickback man). Among the tons of hardcore and metal cds on the shelves, I was particularly attracted by the cd artwork covers of this band. With a style very unusual for a metal band and closer to punk artworks as using raw collage and a very degenerated imagery including nymphets, japanese perversions, weapons, freaky bodies. After enjoying the visuals, it was obvious that I had to discover how it sounds. When Stephen played them, I was completly convinced.
Needless to say that a Mr Williams contribution to Timeless made sense.

Recently Mike did an interview for "metalunderground.com" website where he quotes his collaboration to last Timeless issue.

"Jerk" - Dennis Cooper / Gisèle Vienne

"Jerk is an imaginary reconstruction – strange, poetic, funny and somber – of the crimes perpetrated by American serial killer Dean Corll who, with the help of teenagers David Brooks and Wayne Henley, killed more than twenty young boys in the state of Texas during the mid-70s.
This show sees David Brooks serving his life sentence. In prison, he learns the art of puppets, which somehow enables him to face up to his responsibility as partner in the crimes. He has written a show that reconstructs the murders committed by Dean Corll, using puppets for all the roles. He performs his show in prison for a class of psychology students from a local university."

The other day Max, my new and active collaborator for Timeless, kindly invited me to witness this adaptation of Dennis Cooper's book "Jerk". I appreciated a lot the work done by Gisèle Vienne who directed the play but I was mostly convinced by the performance and charisma of main and only (human) comedian, Jonathan Capdevielle. Funny, mad, "emo pervert".

The music (composed by Peter Rehberg (Pita) and Corrupted) is also very important and contribute in a scary way to the whole atmosphere.

Another element which has a very intersting impact is a little fanzine given at the entrance and which accompany the play. Between some specific scene of the play, David Brooks asked the public to read some parts of it. This fanzine was created in collaboration with Dennis Cooper, Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))) and Jean-Luc Verna.

All along the play, I was sitted aside a woman with long hair who was sometimes staring at the last Timeless I was holding in my hands. Not that I always go out with it like a dumb fetishist, I just brought it thinking Dennis Cooper should be there, so that I could gave his copy ...
As Max has to interview Gisèle Vienne for a local TV program, we stayed after the end and then I discover that this young woman who was obsessed by my mag was precisely Gisèle ... So she told me that Dennis couldn't come and proposed me to gave him when she'll return to Paris. After looking carefully at the content she became very enthousiastic. So I proposed her to swap another copy with some "Jerk fanzines" only available at the play.
She was so happy that she jumped of joy ... Yawn !

Antoine Bernhart unveiled

Antoine Bernhart - featured in last Timeless issue but also in the special Peter Sotos issue with 2 exclusive artworks - has a review in the Agnes Giard "Liberation's sex blog". Miss Giard chronicle is yet interesting but the best is Antoine's interview. I did an approximative translation :

"Recently, in Berlin, I was in a cab and driving through Tiergarten, there was those dark alleys bringing to a darker obscurity. Feeling the black velvet of the night and in the same time the thread, may be blades, may be fangs. That's exciting."

Is it possible to be horny just by the vision of a dead body or a tortured women ?
I am totally convinced about that. I know that because I experienced it already and felt it intensly. When I was a child, with my pals, we discovered a frozen dead body in a pond. I remember very well the thrill and peculiar excitement which surrounded me.
As a teenage, I saw many dead bodies in chuches in Italy. The very pale women skin, looking asleep, abandoned... I'd have love to lift their dress and mess with their underwear before pulling them off. Somebody told me that dead bodies have their fluid running through every holes and I went mad at this idea. But that wasn't so incredible, back in time, when morgues was open to public, people went there for the sexy effect.

Is possible to be excited by evil incarnation ?
What is evil ?

Why melting the most horrendous, the most repellent things with erotic images ?
It is to show sexuality as a danse macabre ?
What's horrendous or repellent for some is not for me. I only represent images that
exhilarate me, possess me and provide pleasure. A friend asked me if I didn't want to satify my fantasies, I answered that's not fantasies. Because I don't want to to those things for "real". My paintings aren't the substitute of a desire or the representation of a frustration. The pleasure I get when creating those images is a pleasure specific to this practice and nothing can replace this or make it stronger.
The day I'll feel the need to do horrible things in real life, the source will not be my paintings. This will be something else and my paintings will be aside.
I don't blow the whistle. I don't feel concerned by what's on people mind. I don't really see what's horrible in my art. It's my own delightful wonderland. It happened that people are offensed or shocked by my art. A friend of mine came to court because he brought one of my book in his country ! Doing such a mess for some doodles ! That's ridiculous. That ain't photos. Everyday tv news bring us their stream of abuse in all kinds, cadavers, genocides. That's fucking hilarious.

This "Area Revue" is a luxuous and prestigious french art magazine run by prolific galerist & editor Alin Avila. It is a very intellectual mag and not a fancy arty mag like the ones you enjoy to wipe your ass.
This is full of interviews, critics from writers and artists' writings (uhh ... wankings !).

Each Area issues are based on a topic for each issue and for this new one called "Jeu" (game) they kindly invited me. I have done an interview of Bruno Richard on this topic. It deals mostly on how it was a "funny game" and a "massacre game" to produce such cruel and sexual images with Pascal Doury for "Elles Sont de Sortie" zine in late 70's/early 80's. To play to "shock the bourgeois" with disturbing images, and also how fun it was to create those images when one start a drawing and the other finish it. Like with "Pornographie Catholique" or with this ESDS issue called "Jeux" showing on the cover a photo of them playing with their dicks.

This project was launched in 2004 by Bruno Richard and I was commissioned to release it. I helped Bruno doing many of the scans and research to build a close to reality "historical" classification of the ESDS issues.
